Dental crowns are meant to last several years, but accidents can cause them to crack and break off prematurely. If this happens to your dental crown, don’t panic. Contact your dentist as soon as possible and then follow these steps until your dental appointment:
– Gather loose pieces: If your dental crown broke into pieces, try to gather as many as you can. Minor chips to the crown may be repairable. Remove the crown entirely if it’s loose to avoid swallowing it.
– Examine the natural tooth: Is your natural tooth jagged? Will it irritate your tongue? If the natural tooth poses a risk to your mouth, look for an emergency care dentist in your area to restore the dental crown.
– Keep the area clean: Without the dental crown, your natural tooth is vulnerable to bacteria. Please refrain from poking around the area with your fingers.
– Reduce the pain: If you’re experiencing pain brought on by the loss of your dental crown, take over-the-counter pain reliever until you can see your dentist. You may feel sensitivity to heat and cold because the tooth pulp is exposed to air.
